The Republic Day is one of three national festivals of India and is celebrated every year, on January 26, to commemorate the adoption of the nation’s constitution. India became independent on August 15, 1947 from the British Empire but its constitution came into force on January 26, 1950. The constitution assembly under the leadership of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar took two years eleven months and eighteen days to make the country’s constitution and finished it on November 26, 1949. According to the constitution, India became a Sovereign Democratic Republic on January 26, 1950. Since then, the Indians celebrate January 26 as the Republic Day. The main Republic Day celebration is held in the capital city New Dehli at Raj Path. Children from different parts of the country present several cultural programmes. The Republic Day is not mere a festival to celebrate, it is an occasion of national pride.
Before the day of the Republic, some schools conduct some competitions
like sports, debates, essay writings and games.Students who win the competition
are given a prize. Some children do some kind of performances singing, dancing
and waving the flag.
Pictures taken by Kumari Devi, the yoga teacher.I´d like to thank her for lending me some of her pictures of the celebration in Anantapur(Andrah Pradesh District).
This year 2014 the Indians are celebrating their 65th Republic
Day.It is a special day for the Indians because on that date Indian´s freedom fighters
got the right for their people.
People usually decorate the
flag with flowers and draw a rangoli in
front of the flag hoisting pole. The Indian flag has tree colours: the safran
representing friendship, the white representing peace and the green represents
the crops.Indians make rangolis to show that all Indians are equal without any
difference in caste, creed, gender, race. Students wear dresses with the colours
of the Indian flag or dress up in white.
