Here you have a poem by William Carlos William an American writer in which a child is being described.
Sympathetic Portrait Of A Child
The murderer's little daughter who is barely ten years old jerks her shoulders right and left so as to catch a glimpse of me without turning round. Her skinny little arms wrap themselves this way then that reversely about her body! Nervously she crushes her straw hat about her eyes and tilts her head to deepen the shadow— smiling excitedly!
As best as she can she hides herself in the full sunlight her cordy legs writhing beneath the little flowered dress that leaves them bare from mid-thigh to ankle—
Why has she chosen me for the knife that darts along her smile?
An explanation to the poem
Williams describes a little girl, “who is barely ten years old”, by using great imagery tactics as he depicts her shyness and excitement . The above quote painted a picture for me due to its very realistic image. When children are shy, due to a variety of different reasons, they tend to hide themselves behind objects, like the little girl’s straw hat, as they believe that as long as they cannot see other individuals; those individuals cannot see them as well. It protects them from whatever harm, insecurity, or uncomfortableness they may feel. In this poem, I believe the little girl is being shy and tries to playfully cover herself up, but only to secretly smile as she innocently covers her eyes.
Since Williams calls the little girl’s father a murderer, it leads me to believe that her father was not a man who gave much attention to the girl, nor did he care much. Therefore, her shyness towards another man could have built upon from this lack of affection and attention from her father. The little girl noticed that the speaker was looking at her and displayed some interest in her being. . Although the poem seems lively in nature at a quick glance due to its innocent portrayal of a child, it also shows the effects of a neglected girl who does not know how to react to fondness from another adult.
The last three lines in the poem, “Why has she chosen me/ for the knife/ that darts along her smile?” play a key role in the poem . Some people are told to have a “killer smile”, which I believe is the description Williams is portraying in the last three lines.

Why did I choose to write about workaholics? The main reason is that the general picture about these people is bad, but there are a lot of them around us and very often we admire them. They are doing exactly what they love : work and they can never have enough of it. Although they spend most of their time working, surprisingly they are happy. They show so good results in what they do. But the consequences are great. Family life is disrupted, intellectual horizons narrow and the consequences to the workaholic's health are severe: fat, lack of exercise and stress. Why do people become workaholics? When a person becomes workaholic is there a way back? How should people around him act in order to keep both him and themselves happy? Lets start explaining what workaholics are, how they act and then we'll get answers to this questions.
WHAT AND WHO ARE WORKAHOLICS?
The definition of workaholism from a dictionary would be someone who has a compulsion to work all time and a workaholic is someone who loves to work or who is addicted to work. How can this people work throughout the whole day and be happy and never tired knowing that they sleep only for 4-5 hours a day. Perhaps the main reason for this is that people evaluate themselves more on measurable things such as personal achievements and financial worth ,not emotional wellness. People often tend to feel guilty if they are not constantly being productive, as they tend to consider relaxation a waste of precious time. They need work to feel good. Workaholics are people who put the work on first place. Usually they need to prove themselves to the their colleagues or their bosses so they would praise them. Sometimes workaholism occurs because the person works to avoid the pain. Workaholism is addiction and all addictions are in a way avoidance of pain. They work just to cover the pain and not deal with it.

[RAY:] The workaholic he works every day
24 hours, no time to play
He won't quit; he's addicted to work
I think he's going out like a jerk
Working, working, what can you do?
See the light from a different point of view
Ready in the morning for the bell to chime
I think he's glad it's working time!
[3rd PERSON:] The workaholic!
[CHORUS:]
[ANITA:] Work your body, baby work your soul
Keep on workin' workin' to the bone
Work your body, baby, work your soul
I'm a workaholic when I'm on the floor!
[3rd PERSON:] The workaholic!
[RAY:] First like a jerk, why you always work?
Messing up your mind with that paperwork?
The only think you need is to break ball is work, and yo, and that's all
They do it for money, but he for fun
he won't get away until the job is done
Drinkin' drinkin' like an alchoholic
The guy is just a workaholic!

In 1605, thirteen young men planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Among them was Guy Fawkes, Britain's most notorious traitor.
After Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, English Catholics who had been persecuted under her rule had hoped that her successor, James I, would be more tolerant of their religion. James I had, after all, had a Catholic mother. Unfortunately, James did not turn out to be more tolerant than Elizabeth and a number of young men, 13 to be exact, decided that violent action was the answer.
A small group took shape, under the leadership of Robert Catesby. Catesby felt that violent action was warranted. Indeed, the thing to do was to blow up the Houses of Parliament. In doing so, they would kill the King, maybe even the Prince of Wales, and the Members of Parliament who were making life difficult for the Catholics. Today these conspirators would be known as extremists, or terrorists.
To carry out their plan, the conspirators got hold of 36 barrels of gunpowder - and stored them in a cellar, just under the House of Lords.
But as the group worked on the plot, it became clear that innocent people would be hurt or killed in the attack, including some people who even fought for more rights for Catholics. Some of the plotters started having second thoughts. One of the group members even sent an anonymous letter warning his friend, Lord Monteagle, to stay away from the Parliament on November 5th. Was the letter real?
The warning letter reached the King, and the King's forces made plans to stop the conspirators.
Guy Fawkes, who was in the cellar of the parliament with the 36 barrels of gunpowder when the authorities stormed it in the early hours of November 5th, was caught, tortured and executed.
It's unclear if the conspirators would ever have been able to pull off their plan to blow up the Parliament even if they had not been betrayed. Some have suggested that the gunpowder itself was so old as to be useless. Since Guy Fawkes and the other conspirators got caught before trying to ignite the powder, we'll never know for certain.
Even for the period which was notoriously unstable, the Gunpowder Plot struck a very profound chord for the people of England. In fact, even today, the reigning monarch only enters the Parliament once a year, on what is called "the State Opening of Parliament". Prior to the Opening, and according to custom, the Yeomen of the Guard search the cellars of the Palace of Westminster. Nowadays, the Queen and Parliament still observe this tradition.
On the very night that the Gunpowder Plot was foiled, on November 5th, 1605, bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the King. Since then, November 5th has become known as Bonfire Night. The event is commemorated every year with fireworks and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire.
Some of the English have been known to wonder, in a tongue in cheek kind of way, whether they are celebrating Fawkes' execution or honoring his attempt to do away with the government.
Words to Guy Fawkes Rhyme
"Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot. We see no reason why Gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot!"
Why do British people have Guys and Fireworks on Bonfire Night?
The Guy (effigy) is made out of old clothes stuffed with paper or straw. The Guy is a reminder of Guy Fawkes. The fireworks are a reminder of the gunpowder Guy Fawkes hid in the cellar of Parliament.
Traditional Bonfire Night Food
Jacket potato in foil as well as burning effigy of Guy Fawkes, the bonfires are used to cook potatoes wrapped in foil and to heat up soup for the crowds that come to watch the fireworks.
The traditional cake eaten on bonfire night is Parkin Cake, a sticky cake containing a mix of oatmeal, ginger, treacle and syrup.
Other foods include sausages cooked over the flames and marshmallows toasted in the fire.
In main town and cities, torch-lit processions are also popular on this night too. The procession leads to where the bonfire and firework displays arePenny for the Guy
During the days before Bonfire Night, children used to take their home-made guys out on the street and ask for "a penny for the Guy" for fireworks.
People in Britain have been celebrating this festival at the end of October for more than two thousand years. They celebrate at the end of the summer, the beginning of the Celtic New Year on October the 31st , the night of All Hallows Eve .The celebration is thought to drive away evil spirits and witches.
Nowadays , is a time for parties and games.
Children dress up in halloween costumes, as witches, ghosts, vampires and other evil creatures. Then they knock on peoples´ doors and say Trick or Treat?. People give them fruit or sweets (treat). If people don´t give them anything children play a trick, like knocking their door and running away, throwing eggs at people´s doors, destroying gardens and tying cans to cars. Many houses have pumpkin lanterns in their windows to frighten witches away. Typical games are " ducking or bobbing for apples" and "buns on a string"

The Beatles were an English rock and pop group formed in Liverpool in 1960 who became one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music.
It was in 1963 , a new phenomenon had just started:The Beatlemania.Whenever the band played in concert ,the influence of their clothes, look and music power was so strong on their fans ( mainly girls) that the police had to hold back them in order to avoid the screaming girls jumping onto the stage to touch their new idols.
Unfortunately for their fans, the group split up in 1970 due to many personal, music and bussiness differences among the group members.
The group consisted of four members: John Lennon ( who was tragically shot in 1980) (rhythm guitar and vocals), Paul McCartney ( bass guitars and vocals) , George Harrison(he died in 2001 after a long illness) ( lead guitar and vocals) and Ringo Starr ( drums and vocals).
The Beatles ruled the music world in the 1960s .They had 22 singles in Britain, and 18 reached number one.Every album of new songs got to number one.In the USA, there were 19 number one singles. Many people think that they were the world´s greatest band of all time.
But the band´s sucess wasn´t only for their musical past. In 1995, the three living Beatles came together to record two new Beatles´ songs Free as a Bird and Real Love. Both songs were by John. The singer recorded them but they weren´t finished.Paul, George and Ringo worked with these recordings as if they were finishing the music for John while he was working on something else.
Fans could buy new Beatles records again!!They also liked the video for Free as Bird.It showed people and places from the band´s past-Stu Sutcliffe(one of John´s art-school friends and first guitar players in the band),the Cavern(The name of the pub where the Beatles used to play), the street outside the Abbey Road Studio.

Ringo acted in a few films and he continued to make records. His 1973 album Ringo was a success. Many children know and love Ringo for another reason. He was the voice of a train in a famous children´s TV programme.
George - His 1970 album All things must Pass reached number one around the world.George´s most famous song in the 1970s was My Sweet Lord, but he was taken to court because of it.It was alleged to be a copy from an old song.He also produced film´s like Monty Python´s Life of Brian and Time Bandits. He died in 2001 after an illness.
Paul has had the most succes after the Beatles. In 1971 he started a new band , Wings, with his wife Linda and guitarist Denny Laine. At first, they played in small concerts all over Britain. Band on the Run was Paul´s most successful album.Wings ended in 1981, but Paul continued making records.
John and his new wife moved to New York. Some of John´s most interesting work was on his first two albums John Lennon, Plastic Ono Band and Imagine. He returned to the recording studio in the summer of 1980 to make Double Fantasy with Yoko. One of songs from the album Starting Over was doing well when he was killed.

This is a Beatle cartoon called I´M SLEEPING
( Beatles cartoons) From 1967. After reading tales of the Knights of the Round Table, John falls asleep and has a dream — set literally against the pages of the book — of young King Arthur (drawn to resemble a figure from the "Yellow Submarine" movie) and Merlin the Magician, and a giant fire-breathing dragon that is terrorizing the countryside. The only solution: put the monster to sleep with song!
The Beatles: Rock Band is the title of a music game that was developed by Harmonix Music Systems, published by MTV Games and distributed by Electronic Arts. The game consists of songs by The Beatles, from their first album Please Please Me, until the last album, Let It Be. The game was released on September 09, 2009, coincide with the release of the Beatles catalog remastered .
The game allows players to play in a virtual band that supports up to four players with the ability to perform three different musical instruments (two guitars, bass, battery, and from one to three microphones for voice). These controls are used to simulate real instruments by pressing the keys that appear on the screen.
The game will work with all Rock Band accessories, incorporating many features of the game of Rock Band series. This game is not an expansion pack for the Rock Band series, as the co-founder of Harmonix, Alex Rigopulos said about the game: "... is a completely new game created from scratch." Players can play with members of The Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

Since the Beatlemania has come back again mainly due to the release of a new video game called : The Beatles :Rock Band I´d like to let you know about Across the Universe an original film based on the Beatles songbook.
This could be described as a musical love film set in the 60s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest.By looking at the above picture you may think that this film could be about a typical love story; however , it´s more than that. The love story of Lucy and Jude( named after the well known Beatles songs Hey Jude and Lucy in the sky ) is intertwined( entrelazado) with the anti-war movement and social protests of the 60s´ and the struggle(lucha) for free speech and civil rights.
Over 30 Beatles´songs are sung by the actors themselves in the film. The story moves from High schools to universities in Massachussets, Princenton and Ohio to the lower east side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots( redadas) , Vietnam and the dockyards(muelles) of Liverpool.
The film starts with a solitary dockworker man Jude(Jim Sturgess) sitting on a quiet beach front. He is singing Girl with a melancholic air looking off into the distant horizon. Later on , Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), the main female character, dances along with her boyfriend Daniel and their high school classmates, Lucy sings to Daniel " Tell me I´m the only one"...................I won´t keep on telling you more about the plot .If you like to know about how the story goes on.....Go and see it .Since it will be a bit difficult to watch it in the cinemas, as it´s a 2007 film , you can buy the DVD or hire it in special video clubs.
I highly recommend it for two reasons : Firstly, you may have fun learning some lyrics of some Beatles´ songs and secondly you may find out more about the social and political movements of the American society in the 60s. By the way, talking about the Beatlemania, in a few days we will be speaking, of course, about this worldwide famous band of the 60s from Liverpool The Beatles and the new video game The Beatles Rock Band.Don´t miss it!

Evanescence is an Americanrock band founded in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995 by the singer and pianist Amy Lee and the guitarist Ben Moody.
In a typical summer camp , Ben Moody listened repeatedly to Amy Lee who was playing the piano and singing the song” I´ll do anything for love” of Meat Loaf. Impressed by her voice asked her to join a music group. This union turned out to be a gothic stylerock band with Amy Lee´s captivating voice.
After recording two private EPs and a demo CD named Origin, with the help of Bigwig Enterprises in 2000, the band released their first full-length album, Fallen, on Wind-up Records in 2003. Fallen sold more than 15 million copies worldwide and helped the band win two Grammy Awards.
A year later, Evanescence released their first live album, Anywhere but Home, which sold more than one million copies worldwide. In 2006, the band released their second studio album, The Open Door, which sold more than five million copies.
The band has suffered several line-up changes, including co-founder Moody leaving mid-tour in 2003, bassist Will Boyd in mid-2006, followed by guitarist John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray in 2007. The latter two of the changes ultimately led the band *to be on hiatus with only temporary replacements *sought in order for the band to finish touring. In June 2009, Amy Lee posted on the official Evanescence website that the band had been working on new material for a proposed 2010 album. to be on hiatus-to stop doing something temporary. Amy is signed to record company Vertigo. Amy´s vocal range is contralto.
She is a self-taught musician who started playing in pubs and coffee houses around Glasgow.

She has stated she will start working on a new album in 2009.
The title track to her ‘This Is The Life’ album has understandably become an anthem but did you know it only took her 10 minutes to write?
If you want to know more about her discography, life, concerts, lyrics you can go to her official website:
Here you are two lyrics of two of the songs of her album, This is the Life (we worked with it in 2nd of Bachillerato in the practical lesson, click on here to listen to it ) and Youth of Today .
A)This is the Life shows a kind of “party” life , the feeling of not really knowing what to do or where to go later on that night probably because of a hangover. It simply describes the normal life of a person who goes out partying to pubs or discos as well as staying at a different friend´s house every night.
Below you´ll find some definitions or synonyms for the words in bold of the song.
This is the Life
Oh the wind whistles down
The cold dark street tonight
And the people they were dancing to the music vibe
And the boys chase the girls with the curls in their hair
While the shy tormented youth sit way over there
And the songs they get louder
Each one better than before And you're singing the songs
Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna sleep tonight? And you're singing the songs
Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna sleep tonight?
Where you gonna sleep tonight? So you're heading down the road in your taxi for four
And you're waiting outside Jimmy's front door
But nobody's in and nobody's home 'til four
So you're sitting there with nothing to do
Talking about Robert Riger and his motley crew
And where you're gonna go and where you're gonna sleep tonight And you're singing the songs
Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna sleep tonight? And you're singing the songs
Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna sleep tonight?
Where you gonna sleep tonight? And you're singing the songs
Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size

B)Youth of today is an statement of intentions and claims aimed to those of older generations who try to put down the youngster´s feelings and are not understanding with them.
Youth of Today - Amy Macdonald
Maybe if you were some spearheaded guy
I would listen to what you have to say
But you're just some incapable figure
Thinking you're bigger than me, but you're not
Yet you don't know a thing about the youth of today
Stating your opinion making it ring in my head all day
And you say,
"My children weren't the same"
"My children's children they're the ones to blame"
And you say,
"In my day we were better behaved"
But it's not your day no more...
And we are the youth of today
Change our hair in every way
And we are the youth of today
We'll say what we wanna say
And we are the youth of today
Don't care what you have to say at all
And maybe if you had a true point of view
I would listen to you
But it's just your one sided feelings
They keep getting in my way making it ring in my head
And you don't know a single thing about the youth of today
Stating your opinion making it ring in my head all day
And you say,
"My children weren't the same"
"My children's children they're the ones to blame"
And you say,
"In my day we were better behaved"
But it's not your day no more...
And we are the youth of today
Change our hair in every way
And we are the youth of today
We'll say what we wanna say
And we are the youth of today
Don't care what you have to say at all
And you say,
"My children weren't the same"
"My children's children they're the ones to blame"
And you say,
"In my day we were better behaved"
But it's not your day no more...
And we are the youth of today

And we are the youth of today
We'll say what we wanna say
And we are the youth of today
Don't care what you have to say at all
