Synthetic drugs popular as use of opiates wanes
Drug use is moving away from cocaine and opiates and towards synthetic drugs such as amphetamines, the UN says.
In its World Drug Report it says it expects that soon there will be more people using synthetic drugs than opium, heroin and cocaine together.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) also found that cocaine consumption has fallen significantly in the US in recent years.
But the number of cocaine users in Europe has doubled, it says.

The shift in demand has led to South American drug cartels establishing new routes through West Africa.
Trafficking is causing instability in many developing countries, particularly in Africa and Latin America, the report says.
"People snorting coke in Europe are killing the pristine forests of the Andean countries and corrupting governments in West Africa", UNODC director Antonio Maria Costa said.
Shifting consumption
Developing countries are also seeing a rise in drug use, with heroin consumption up in eastern Africa and cocaine use up in West Africa and South America.
Demand for the synthetic drug ecstasy is falling or levelling off in Europe.
But the drug is becoming more popular in Asia.
"We will not solve the world drug problem by shifting consumption from the developed to the developing world", Mr Costa said.
In Europe the number of cocaine users has doubled to around four million in the last decade. The market is now worth $34bn, almost as much as that in North America.
However, world cocaine production has fallen by 12% to 18% in the past three years and the North American market is shrinking, thanks in part to police crackdowns in Colombia, a producer country, and transit country Mexico.
UNODC also found a downward trend in global heroin consumption.
It expects opium production to fall steeply in 2010 because of a blight that could wipe out a quarter of Afghanistan's poppy crop.
The United Nations reports that global drug use is changing. The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime says that in the developing world, more people are using cocaine and heroin; whereas in the developed world, there is a rise in the use of synthetic drugs. The body reports that worldwide use of traditional drugs has gone down, while at the same time there has been a huge rise in the use of stimulants and prescription drugs. The UN estimates the global number of users of synthetic drugs is between 30 and 40 million. Antonio Maria Costa, director of the U.N. drug office, told reporters: "People are saying goodbye to heroin and they are nearly not so much enchanted by cocaine, but they are starting to use prescription drugs in amounts which make them addictive."
The report highlights a worrying trend of increased drug use in developing countries, especially in Asia and Africa. Mr Costa said demand for cocaine and heroin was growing on these two continents and that many governments did not have the resources to help addicts. "As a result," he said, "there is now the risk of a public health disaster in developing countries that would enslave masses of humanity to the misery of drug dependence." Costa also expresses his concern over the popularity of synthetic drugs. He warns there are “unlimited amounts of them, produced in mafia labs at trivial costs”. Costa also noted that globalization made it easier for illegal drug manufacturers to operate. They can be made near to their target markets and the raw materials are easy to find.

From the point of view of The Stones and much of their audience, this hit exposes the hypocrisy of the proto soccer moms (and Roger Kaputnik from Mad Magazine type dads,for that matter) in using pills and, by extension, booze to get them through the day but condemning others for using other drugs.
The phrase soccer mom broadly refers to a middle-class suburban woman who spends a significant amount of her time transporting her school-age children to their sporting events or other activities. Indices of American magazines and newspapers show relatively little usage of the term until a 1995 Denver city council election. It came into widespread use during the 1996 United States presidential election.
Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Mother's Little Helper" was recorded in Los Angeles from 3 to 8 December 1965. It was released in the album "Aftermath" in 1966. The song deals with the darker perspective of the use of prescription drug "Valium" among housewives. In the song, the main character Jimmy has taken the titular train to Brighton, consumed a lot of drugs, recollecting his life with the Mods, the cultural movement to which he belongs (even if he has dropped out for now), and their duels with the Rockers. Jimmy's memories are extremely disjointed, consisting mainly of anger, confusion, violence, sexual frustration, and rootlessness.
"5.15", like many of the songs from Quadrophenia is self-referential - "M-m-m-my generation" is a line - and thus represents an angrily self-centered, teenage disconnection with society, family and the opposite sex. 'Jimmy' was "born in the war", that is, World War II and its aftermath, does not understand why he should care about it (or anything) in the context of his extravagant Mod values.
